Before you compare providers, it helps to have a rough idea of what you are after, a traditional service, a small and simple farewell, a burial or a cremation, religious or not. You do not need every detail settled, just a sense of direction so you can find a director who fits.

What to look for

• Clear, itemised pricing. A good director gives you a written quote that breaks down their own fee and the third-party costs. Avoid anyone who is vague about money.
• The right services. Some specialise in particular cultural or religious traditions, eco-friendly funerals, or simple no-fuss cremations. Match them to what you need.
• Genuine care and patience. You should never feel rushed or upsold. Warmth and honesty matter enormously here.
• Location. A director near you, or near where the service will be held, makes the practical side simpler.

• What is included in your fee, and what costs are paid to others (the cemetery, crematorium, celebrant)?
